Portsmouth Naval Base - Structural Design
Portsmouth Naval Base has been an integral part of Portsmouth since the 12th Century. It is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy’s surface ships, including the new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (at 65,000 tonnes, the biggest ship ever built for the Royal Navy), the formidable Type 45 destroyers, Type 23 frigates, mine countermeasures and fishery protection squadrons.
The Team carried out building and structural appraisals plus design services throughout the built estate, encompassing buildings and maritime structures. This included some 200 heritage and high value, secure military structures over a period of five years. Visual structural appraisals, feasibility studies and Building Information Modeling (BIM) were used.
A condition survey for refurbishment discovered that serious structural issues arose from steel frame corrosion requiring substantial emergency restorative works. Geotechnical Investigation:
Desmonde Associates worked with partners to carry out geotechnical investigations and proposed a scope of upgrade works to provide a structurally stable treatment in support of the new Victory Jetty. Project Management: We coordinated internal resources, multiple teams, project planning, feasibility analysis and close working with key stakeholders through the full project life cycle including soft landings
